A Partnership between Department of Labour and Nelson City Council
You'll find Nelson Tasman to be a place receptive to green ideas and practices - our community is heavily involved in recycling activities as well as reducing consumption and reusing products so they don't clog our landfills.
Local councils manage many of Nelson and Tasman services and facilities, such as community and recreation, the streets, water, sewerage, rubbish, building consents, parks, swimming pools and libraries. Other facilities are available to the public through local organisations as well.
The Nelson City and Tasman District Councils provide comprehensive services, ranging from community events to environmental monitoring.
Following changes to the local government sector, councils throughout New Zealand now play a broader role in promoting the social, economic, environmental and cultural wellbeing of their communities.
The Councils’ approaches have sustainability at heart. Nelson and Tasman Councils differ from most councils around the country - as Unitary Councils they have responsibility for planning for environmental issues like pest management, transport and flood control, as well as the usual local services like water supply, sewage disposal and street management.
The councils’ maintain partnerships with government agencies and they play an active role in environmental protection. This includes monitoring and enforcement of measures to keep Nelson’s environment in good health, for local residents and the region’s visitor sector.
The Nelson and Tasman councils work together on many development projects and annual events that enhance community life. These include:
