You can buy a house if you can pay the full price of the property or arrange a long-term loan or mortgage from a lender, such as a finance house or bank.

When you first arrive

To find somewhere to stay while you are looking for a more permanent home, consider a furnished apartment, motel, bed and breakfast or backpacker hostel. There is a booklet available from the Salvation Army office on the corner of Rutherford Street and Montgomery Square carpark that lists the names of landlords, temporary accommodation rental agencies and guest houses.

Consult the yellow pages also for listings of rental agencies. Likewise, searching the local newspaper listings as well as www.trademe.co.nz can be useful in finding available accommodation.
